Empowering a Healthcare Charity's Mission

Anthony Nolan, the pioneering UK charity that has been transforming lives through stem cell transplants for over 50 years, is committed to saving patients’ lives while protecting the planet. Faced with carbon performance requirements for being a supplier to the NHS, and the challenge of meeting net zero by 2050, the organisation turned to Ideagen Carbon Accounting to gain there liable emissions data intelligence it needed.

By replacing time-consuming spreadsheets with Ideagen’s next-generation platform, Anthony Nolan now tracks and manages greenhouse gas emissions with accuracy, speed, and insight -helping the charity focus on its mission: improving patients’ quality of life without negatively impacting the environment - and meet customer requirements.

The Challenge

Anthony Nolan’s work spans labs, clinics, and stem cell collection centres, alongside a complex global value chain that includes donor provision, patient follow-up, and business travel.

While Environmental Sustainability Lead, Izzy Tulloch, had successfully built a greenhouse gas inventory in-house, the process was manual and resource-intensive. With future expectations from stakeholders such as the NHS, and new strategic goals like product-level emissions insights, Izzy needed a more scalable way to:

  • Deeply understand the charity’s climate impact
  • Reduce the time spent managing and analysing data
  • Produce accurate reporting for Annual, SECR, and Sustainability reports
  • Engage colleagues more effectively on sustainability requirements

The Ideagen Partnership

Through a pilot, Izzy tested Ideagen Carbon Accounting against Anthony Nolan’s needs. Working directly with Ideagen’s Chief Carbon Officer, she explored how the solution could accelerate the charity’s journey, while also ensuring compliance and alignment with broader climate objectives.

Key benefits identified during the trial:

  • Significant reduction in manual workload
  • Confidence in the robustness of emissions calculations
  • Access to Ideagen’s subject matter expertise in sustainability and carbon accounting
  • Assurance that compliance and reporting needs—such as SECR—would be met

Transformative Outcomes

Within just one month of adopting Ideagen Carbon Accounting, Anthony Nolan achieved:

Report-ready Scope 1, 2, and 3 accounts for two complete financial years

90% less input time from the Environmental Sustainability Lead compared to the spreadsheet-based approach

Seamless integration into key disclosures:

  • Annual Report
  • SECR Report
  • Sustainability Report
  • Internal communications to staff and stakeholders
“As well as making the process much faster, the results gave us valuable new insights which have helped me engage more effectively across our organisation to accelerate towards our sustainability targets.”   Izzy Tulloch, Environmental Sustainability Lead, Anthony Nolan

With this transformation, Anthony Nolan has moved from a reactive, manual process to a future-ready emissions accounting system that is scalable, precise, and empowering.
